A move to commemorate the New Zealand land wars is being suggested in parliament. The hurdle is finding an appropriate date and what event would the land wars memorial day be based on.
The current day National government is astoundingly ignorant of New Zealand colonial history for example the New Zealand prime minister claiming New Zealand was “settled peacefully” by the British being a colonisation apologist was careful not to use the word “colonisation”.
Prime Minister John Key says a national holiday to the commemorate the land wars is unlikely. An estimated 2990 people died during the New Zealand wars and the majority were Maori.
