Today delegates from fast food chains across New Zealand met at trade unions hall in Auckland to discuss unite unions End Zero hour contracts of fast food workers. The Mana Movement is an integral part of the fight against Zero hour contracts. One of those members is the illustrious Joe Carolan, a battler from Ireland and Mana candidate for Mt Albert in the last election. Also in attendance was Gerard Hehir the National secretary for Unite Union and Mana. Bonita Belworthy the chair of Te Tai Haruru rohe for Mana came to show her support for the cause.

Many of the workers from fast food joints such as Wendy’s and McDonald’s spoke of their managers playing favouritism in the workplace and manipulating workers by decreasing hours after they had called in sick. Fast food companies are hiring four workers to share 40 hours a week, failing to give any employee job security. Many workers described horror story’s of having to live life by the phone waiting for that precious call to get some work hours.

The end zero hours campaign has been pioneered here in Aotearoa New Zealand and will spread like wildfire around the world. Workers from Indonesia have already stood in solidarity with the campaign. Mana Movement stands in solidarity with the stop zero hour contracts of fast food workers.
