Denying New Zealand’s colonial past

Recently Prime minister John Key made these comments in regards to the  colonisation of New Zealand

“When we talk about the treaty and sovereignty and all those matters, you take a step back and say well what was really happening. In my view New Zealand was one of the very few countries in the world that were settled peacefully. Maori probably acknowledge that settlers had a place to play and bought with them a lot of skills and a lot of capital”  John Key

Within 50 years of the signing of the treaty of Waitangi the Maori population was decimated a decrease of 47,000 people approximately 52% of the population.  This was due to a land aquistion war instigated by John Keys predecessor Sir George Grey. His objective was land aquisition, to appease greedy British colonists that were like pigs at the trough. The New Zealand settlements Act 1863 confiscated approximately 2 million acres of private real estate  offered to British colonists for a fee simple. The majority of this confiscation was justified by British racial superiority and many Maori refused to be submissive towards the Queen of England.

Some questions I have if the colonists were so wealthy why didn’t they buy the land instead of legislative theft using the New Zealand settlements Act. What are the other countries the indigenous people prospered and enjoyed colonisation –Mexico, South Africa, India ?

Many Maori do acknowledge that settlers had skills and capital but Mr Key neglected to mention so did Maori they were wealthy land owners with a fleet of merchant vessels and now they are at the bottom of the food chain due to land confiscation and racial extermination.

Many Kiwis have a mentality if you are colonial denier your a good bloke but if you believe colonisation is an unmitigated disaster you are a radical with a chip on your shoulder. New Zealanders have been wearing blinkers towards colonisation as it killed more New Zealanders than any event in history and John Key intends on carrying on this tradition of ignorance. One day there will be a reckoning as New Zealanders we can’t continue to ignore our history where colonists came out on top and Maori are expected to be grateful for these circumstances.
