Records prove the airport was initially owned by hapu Patu Koraha &amp; Ngai Tohianga and the last recorded owner was Kataraina Erstich\u00a0\u00a0(Ng\u0101ti Kahu).<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 18.0pt;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mananews.co.nz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/riro.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8641\" src=\"http:\/\/mananews.co.nz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/riro-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"riro\" width=\"300\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mananews.co.nz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/riro-201x300.jpg 201w, http:\/\/mananews.co.nz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/riro-570x851.jpg 570w, http:\/\/mananews.co.nz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/riro.jpg 643w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Kaitaia \u00a0airport was used to defend New Zealand against a possible invasion by the Imperial Japanese Navy during the war. Many believed the land would be returned to Ng\u0101ti Kahu immediately after the war.<\/p>\n<p>After a 28 hour occupation that ended in 6 arrests Mana News spoke with Wikatana Popata . &#8220;The reason why we are up there, land was unlawfully taken from our wh\u0101nau.\u00a0 Finlayson is to blame\u00a0if Ng\u0101ti Kahu don&#8217;t sign the treaty settlement . We\u2019re not here just for Patu Koraha, we are here for Ngai Takoto and Ngai Tohianga , we are all the same.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ngati Kahu submission for the Te Hiku claims settlement that was rejected by Treaty negiotations Minister Chris Finlayson.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Popata went onto to say &#8220;Finlayson wants to give them money not the land back. I feel for my people and my kuia and wish the Crown would just give back our whenua. Standing out in the cold 24\/7, \u00a0\u00a0people going past calling us Niggers.<\/p>\n<p>Hospital planes are being delayed by the airport authorities not by the Iwi. We are not bad people if someone is sick we will open it up for them. They had a debate about closing down the Airport, it\u2019s not our fault the Airport was on our land that was stolen from us. We\u00a0did not stop the medical aircraft.\u00a0 Auckland Airport overreacted and made that decision- that was Government propaganda&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s mamae (hurtful), our old people, have to come out in the cold. \u00a0I applaud our old people that stand strong. If we don&#8217;t do something about this this Government will run all over us. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The settlement cedes sovereignty to the Crown . Ngai Tohianga and Patu Koraha \u00a0are not going to be bullied by the Crown. \u00a0Ng\u0101ti Kahu will stand strong&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We spoke with Reti Boynton after he and several Ng\u0101ti Kahu kaum\u0101tua were \u00a0arrested by Police &#8220;Police looked after the protesters. They gave us\u00a0a cup of tea at Kaitaia Police station.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Finlayson said they (Ng\u0101ti Kahu) could go to hell.\u00a0Finlayson cut Ng\u0101ti Kahu out of this settlement -Ng\u0101ti Kahu are the Mana Whenua to this airport because Ng\u0101ti Kahu have their burial grounds either side of the Airport.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ng\u0101ti Kahu applied to the Waitangi Tribunal to grant resumption \u2013 the right to resume ownership of their land.\u00a0 They had already been to the Waitangi Tribunal for resumption and were denied.\u00a0 Ng\u0101ti Kahu appealed to the High Court and the High Court ordered the Waitangi Tribunal to re hear Ngati Kahu\u2019s request for resumption, which if granted would make Ng\u0101ti Kahu wealthier than the 4 other Muriwhenua tribes put together.<\/p>\n<p>Mangu Awarau ,\u00a0 Ngai Takoto kaum\u0101tua said\u00a0 \u201cWe have been talking with Ng\u0101ti Kahu for a long time.\u00a0 Ngai Takoto and Patu Koraha are one and the same and it\u2019s natural that we share.\u00a0 The CEO of Ngai Takoto Rangitane Marsden, his dad M\u0101ori Marsden is buried at Karep\u014dnia in Patu Koraha and his Mum Jane is buried 2 .5 kilometres\u00a0 away at Matarau in Ngai Takoto.
