{"id":10132,"date":"2017-06-23T19:45:48","date_gmt":"2017-06-23T06:45:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mananews.co.nz\/wp\/?p=10132"},"modified":"2017-06-24T16:54:16","modified_gmt":"2017-06-24T03:54:16","slug":"hone-pani-tamati-waka-nene-harawira","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/mananews.co.nz\/wp\/?p=10132","title":{"rendered":"Hone Pani Tamati Waka Nene HARAWIRA"},"content":{"rendered":"<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"657\">Hone Pani Tamati Waka Nene <strong>HARAWIRA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mananews.co.nz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/honeH.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10133\" src=\"http:\/\/mananews.co.nz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/honeH.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"http:\/\/mananews.co.nz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/honeH.jpg 297w, http:\/\/mananews.co.nz\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/honeH-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 297px) 100vw, 297px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>HONE<\/strong> is a M\u0101ori Activist, and the <strong>leader of the MANA Movement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>He was born in Wh\u0101ngarei and attended <strong>St Stephens<\/strong> before going on to <strong>Auckland University<\/strong> where he joined <strong>Ng\u0101 Tamatoa<\/strong> in the early 70s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HONE<\/strong> stood with Ng\u0101ti Wh\u0101tua at <strong>Bastion Point<\/strong>, led <strong>He Taua<\/strong> against racism at Auckland University, led the <strong>Waitangi Action Committee<\/strong> fight for Treaty rights, led the <strong>Patu Squad<\/strong> during the Springbok Tour of 1981, got arrested, called <strong>Bishop Tutu<\/strong> as his witness \u2026 and won!<\/p>\n<p><strong>HONE<\/strong> led the<strong> Kawariki<\/strong> in the 1980\u2019s, unveiled the <strong>Tino Rangatiratanga<\/strong> flag in 1990, and met <strong>Nelson Mandela<\/strong>, in 1995.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HONE<\/strong> has also visited the <strong>New People\u2019s Army<\/strong> in the Philippines, addressed the <strong>Physicists\u2019 Against Nuclear War<\/strong> conference in Moscow, attended the <strong>International Indian Treaty Council<\/strong>, campaigned against the bombing of <strong>Kaho\u2019olawe<\/strong> in Hawai\u2019i, and participated in numerous <strong>Indigenous Gatherings<\/strong> around the world.<\/p>\n<p>In 1985, <strong>HONE<\/strong> and his wh\u0101nau moved back to their tribal homelands in the far north of Aotearoa, and over the next 30 years, <strong>HONE<\/strong> dedicated his life to developing M\u0101ori potential.<\/p>\n<p>In line with that philosophy, <strong>HONE<\/strong> served as General Manager for the <strong>Aupouri Ng\u0101ti Kahu Te Rarawa Trust<\/strong>, <strong>\u0100niwaniwa Kokiri, Te W\u0101nanga Reo o Te Tai Tokerau, Aupouri M\u0101ori Trust Board<\/strong>, and <strong>Te Hiku Media<\/strong> where he started <strong>Te Hiku FM, Sunshine FM, Tai FM, Country FM<\/strong> and <strong>Tehiku TV<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>During that time <strong>HONE<\/strong> also chaired the <strong>Far North Rugby League, Rangaunu Sports Club, \u0100niwaniwa Kohanga Reo, Te Kura Kaupapa M\u0101ori o Te Rangi \u0100niwaniwa, Te Wharekura o Te Rangi \u0100niwaniwa <\/strong>and <strong>Te W\u0101nanga o Te Rangi \u0100niwaniwa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HONE<\/strong> has also held national appointments including <strong>Chair of Te Whakaruruhau o nga Reo Irirangi M\u0101ori o Aotearoa, Chair of Te P\u016btahi P\u0101oho<\/strong> and <strong>Member of Te M\u0101ngai P\u0101ho<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004 <strong>HONE<\/strong> led M\u0101oridom\u2019s largest ever protest, the <strong>Foreshore &amp; Seabed March<\/strong>, which launched him in to the NZ Parliament where he served as <strong>MP for Tai Tokerau<\/strong>, from 2005-2014. During that time, <strong>HONE <\/strong>led a crusade to make <strong>Aotearoa Smokefree by 2025,<\/strong> led the <strong>Feed the Kids <\/strong>campaign, and supported a number of other <strong>Indigenous activities <\/strong>and <strong>Anti-Poverty initiatives<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2014 <strong>HONE<\/strong> has rebuilt the <strong>ANT Trust<\/strong> and runs a <strong>prisoner reintegration programme<\/strong> and a <strong>Wh\u0101nau Ora contract<\/strong>. He also launched the <strong>Taitokerau Rugby League <\/strong>and one of NZ\u2019s most innovative social service programmes, <strong>Open the Curtains. <\/strong>He continues to serve on the Board of his kura, and is engaged in creating and supporting a number of other training and employment initiatives across the north.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HONE<\/strong> has wide tribal connections throughout Tai Tokerau. His mother is from Ng\u0101ti Hau and Ng\u0101puhi, and his father is from Aupouri, Ng\u0101puhi and Ng\u0101ti Whatua. Hone\u2019s wife Hilda is from Ng\u0101ti Whatua and Te Rarawa.
